interview with Barry Murphy the founder and designer of Birchley Community Village Developments

Barry, what motivated you to create Birchley Community Developments?

I have visited and lived in many beautiful locations around the world, and one thing I noticed on my travels is that a lot of expats can sometimes feel a little isolated in foreign countries, regardless of how beautiful and affordable.

Yes, they might meet others through sports or social groups, but in many cases they are too spread out to meet up on a regular basis.

With a community of 100 homes, where members have a lot in common, there is always others to share time and experiences with, and many studies have shown the positive health impact of in person socialising and communication.

How cool is it to be able to walk to your local community bar, and enjoy a game of cards or watch a sporting event with others, at a minimal cost, just as an example.
The reality is that your quality of life depends on the quality of your neighbours and beautiful surroundings.

Great value, simple, classy, spacious, comfortable and completely maintenance free living is the short answer, but at the same time ensuring we use the most advanced quality building products available on the market.

One of the most important aspects of the design was to ensure that our villas were energy efficient for all climates from a heating and cooling insulation perspective.

We also designed the bedroom to also be an independent living space with an armchair, television and work station, so that both members of a couple can escape from each other for periods of time!!!

Also, many couples who relocate make the mistake of looking for 2, 3 or 4 bedroom villas/apartments, thinking that their relatives and friends will come and visit, which never happens as much as they initially expected. Then they end up with a lot of smaller rooms that are of no benefit to the couple who are living alone at least 95% of the time, instead of having nice large open spaces and at a price tag of approximately 90k Euro, not 200k Euro+.

This price range allows for a lot of members to hold on to their home property where they have lived for years, and still be able to afford one of our villas abroad.

We only commence the process once we have 100 signed up members for any particular village, so that the whole village is completed in one go including all of the villas and community common areas. The planning permission process can vary from between 2 to 4 months, and the construction of the entire village is completed within 12 months from there.
All community members take possession of their properties simultaneously on the same day, so nobody is ever living on a building site.

No. I am going to live in all of them because I am going to keep one villa for myself in each village. I love travelling and meeting new friends.
Our members will also have an APP so that they can swap villas with other members in different countries for periods of time, whenever they want too. This will keep life interesting, and yet they will have the exact same home familiarity wherever they go with no rent to pay.
We will also have a database of non property owner members, so that property owners can rent out their villa if they wish, but all rental contracts have to be for a minimum of 90 days, so that we keep the village community spirit alive. We don’t want to turn our villages into holiday resorts with people coming and going for a week at a time.

Cheers Amanda, and all I can say regardless of what the future holds is that despite the fact that it has taken a lot of hard work, financial commitment and travelling to get to this point, I have really enjoyed the journey so far.
The icing on the cake would be to watch many members from different demographics having the opportunity to seriously improve the quality of their lifestyle as we go forward.

“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Jovan Maric from Serbia for the website design and build, as well as Rediet Endale from Ethiopia who was the architect that helped bring my designs to fruition with some of her own quality touches.”
